Saudade is a word in Portuguese and Galician that has no direct translation in English. It often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing may never return. A stronger form of saudade may be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing, moved away, separated, or died.
*CORRECTION IN THE PICTURE: The word is spelled ‘SAUDADE’.

English, as rich in vocabulary it is…all those synonyms and antonyms…has some needed growth. I struggle with retaining any Spanish, but a gift I would love to have is one of learning languages. Maybe in my next life. BUT I love this word because doesn’t this bittersweet longing affect all of us, especially as we grow older.

Exactly. This words can be used by all human kind, to define this feeling, at some point of time. They all experience it.
I too want to learn more languages. I only know three, yet. It’s never too late to learn. Start with it. Pick a language today, and start learning. 🙂

I had always thought it was spelled Saudade; although maybe there is some alternate spelling?

Thank you so much for not taking offence at my pointing out the simple typo; that is not something I am normally prone to do, although as the word in question was in fact the subject matter of your piece, I thought it worthwhile. Do please feel free to remove my comments now that you have made the necessary correction. All best wishes, Hariod. 🙂

Nope. To err is human. I absolutely believe this saying.
And offence? No way. It was a help. 🙂
Keeping the comments. I am not shy to admit my mistakes. 🙂
